Watch 3
I was woken up early this morning with a variety of flies swirling around me in my bunk. They entered the boat yesterday when there was no wind and we were almost floating backwards, and they are still bothering us today. Coming from the most northernly point in Scotland, I have never seen anything like some of the critters that have joined us on our journey: some yellow and back with large wings, some pale green with lacey wings, and even a red and black butterfly decided to hitch a ride. This morning was the first morning since we set sail from Aland that I have been able to stomach eating breakfast- one slice of toast with jam and the other with two slices of meat. I think the flies enjoyed it as much as I did.
When me and the rest of watch three started our round at 8am, we began with packing away the brigg sail which lives above the deck house. This was a pretty straight forward task that didn’t take much time, though handling the sails is dirty work and even more tasking when your stomach is twisting and turning. Following this we washed the deck with water and scrubbing brushes, which I think most people enjoyed as it felt like a productive way to pass the time.
After an hour or two passed, it was time to practice line throwing which, we were told, will help the land crew tie the boat up once we reach Poland. Everyone took a few turns throwing the rope out to sea, perhaps secretly hoping theirs was thrown the furthest. As time moved slowly on, the wind picked up and we had to adjust the sails a number of times which helped us increase our speed to over 5 knots. Which, compared to the 0.5 knots we averaged the night before, had everyone in good spirits… those of us who aren’t still sea sick that is.
The flies are buzzing in my ears and are swirling around my fingers as I type this and I don’t think I can handle it anymore, so I will end this report here.
Regards,
Iona
