After our main engine (affectionately known on board as Emma) was duly guarded by many of the TSR’s A and B class ships‘ engineers yesterday, today she reliably took us out of the port of Mariehamn and towards the starting line for the last Tall Ships Race 2024. We really enjoyed the port days on the Aland Islands and not only had a good exchange with other ships among the engineers, but also spent a great time in port with all the crews. An absolute highlight was the visit to the P-Liner “Pommern”.
We marveled at the huge old holds, live demonstrations of original engines and climbing and packing sails on yards “with the diameter of a baby whale”. The cute little island has a lot to offer, such as swimming on the beach, pizza and ice cream in the best weather and interesting museums and history.
But now it’s time for the sea again and we are generally ready for an exciting regatta and somewhat wilder conditions than on the two previous trips.
As we are a sail-training ship, we practiced diligently on the bridge and made preparations; Alin, as an officer in training, successfully sailed her first leaving port manoever.
Sovereign – the captain and the engineer nodded approvingly.
Over the course of the night, we will transform the ship into a sailing vessel and pass the starting line in the morning.
