Today the weather took a dramatic turn. While the previous days were clear and sunny, today`s weather was quite the opposite. It was raining from the moment we woke up and calmed down only in the late afternoon. Unfortunately, there was no wind so we had to turn the ship around and head towards Mariehamn. Luckily, we had cake!!! Therefore, we weren`t discouraged. We got lots of practice packing and unpacking the sails. To do that we had the opportunity to climb not only the mast but also the bowsprit of the ship which was a bit of a challenge but really fun. Some of us who had not been on the yards before went up there because it was the first time we packed the sails with all hands on deck. The rain was quite enjoyable as we had been waiting to put our waterproof clothes to work – finally we could fulfill our dreams of looking like the cool fishermen on TV. As a nice surprise on our arrival to the Mariehamn archipelago our ship was approached by a pilot boat, that welcomed us to their city. When we arrived at the port the skies cleared up and the scenery was impeccable.
We think being on the ship and on the sea makes us really happy – although we do feel a bit tired at times, we still enjoy ourselves in all conditions and every new experience feels valuable. Learning these things and getting to know the ship feels meaningful. The physical activity can be draining but it feels like therapy in a way. Fun fact: the only Irish person on the ship was in the kitchen for the whole day and you`ll never guess what she was doing there – cooking.
Big thanks to the crew for being so patient with us even when we don`t get everything right away or when we´re just fooling around!
We love this ship!
