At 4 o’clock this morning we finally started sailing and switched off the engine, and some time after that we had an all hands to get ready for the race.

Some people got to climb up to the royal to unpack all the necessary sails and all the trainees were very excited. At first this wasn’t too easy, since at the top of the mast there’s a lot more movement than what you feel on deck, but they handled it really well. In the meantime, the crew on deck prepared the rest of the sails, and at the end we had almost all of our sails set, right on time to cross the starting line. Many other ships taking part in the Tall Ships Races were all around us. At 6:14 we crossed the starting line and officially started racing.

During the day, our captain updated us on our course, showing the people on watch our current position on a nautical map and what our next move it would be. All of us were really excited to hear about our good (although temporary) classification in the race, considering that we’re not the fastest ship in our category, and that we have an inexperienced crew.

Our amazing cooks prepared delicious food for all of us during the day, so we could have enough energy for all the hard work we had to do.

In the afternoon the wind, coming at first from the west, started slowing down until we were moving at only 0,8 knots, but then it changed direction to a more favorable one and we reached a speed of around 7 knots.

Tonight we expect the wind to gain even more strength, and we’re going to do our best to have a good race!

Sincerely, Cecilia and Elias
