The social media detox we all had to face was probably not the main reason many of us started our Ocean College journey. But I personally was kind of looking forward to it. Social media has become such a big part of my everyday life that I wanted to find out who I was without it.
At home, it is the most normal thing to watch some videos while eating alone, send pictures of everything to everyone, or play some games while sitting on the toilet. We never really have to confront ourselves with our own thoughts or actions. We can just hide in this big world called ✨the internet✨.
On the Roald, you start to realize that there is so much more you can do instead of doomscrolling. For example, we started swapping our books so everyone has access to a whole library, and we can exchange our thoughts about what we have read. While we are eating, there is always something new to talk about, and the so-called “toothbrushing parties” are legendary. All of us brush our teeth at the same time and try not to laugh too loudly because we might wake up the machinist.
With all that said, it is still a highlight to get your phone during this adventure. When we manoeuvred our ship into the harbour of St. George this morning, we were already looking forward to getting our phones back and being able to call our parents. After switching cabins and cleaning the whole ship, the time had finally come.
From that moment on, you could see at least ten people sitting next to each other talking—but less with each other and more with all their loved ones at home. Because as good as it is for our bonding time to be without phones, we all miss home very much, and it is great to be able to tell everyone what is going on in our lives at the moment.
Another negative aspect of not being on social media or using your phone for a few weeks is that you simply don’t know what is happening in the rest of the world. It is quite frustrating when you don’t know what is going on at home or in other parts of the world. Was there a lot of snow at home? Did someone in my family have a baby? Is there a new war?
All of this feels so far away that you don’t even think about it while you are out on the water. It is a welcome break for our brains, but once you get your phone back, it floods you like a gigantic wave of news. That can be pretty hard to process.
Nevertheless, I really enjoy the time when we don’t think about home and instead sit together playing games—which is exactly what we did today as the day came to an end.
Greetings:
