My watch began at 4 in the morning. Yesterday we had really windy and rainy weather during my watch, in the afternoon the sun came out. So I thought maybe today in my morning watch we will have nice weather so it wouldn’t be too cold and some sunshine would also be a nice thing.
But ‚Pustekuchen‘ is what I would say in German. Basically means ‚that was definitely not the case‘. I was woken up with the words: It’s freezing outside and soooo windy! Great. So I put on my 5 layers of cloth to not freeze to death and I went out into the windy night. During our watch we jibed, which means we turned the ship while going with the stern through the wind. We practiced some knots and took down the outer jib. After that I went to sleep…
The next part I was only told, but while I was asleep we took down our sails and started to go by engine. We packed all our sails really nice and “shipshape”, so that we look good and presentable while being in Lerwick. Around 2 o’clock in the afternoon we arrived in the harbour and after some close manoeuvring around some corners we had all our mooring lines fast. After a very nice evening in the galley we are very much looking forward to the crew parade and some other crew activities the next days.
