Two of the planned 15 days at sea have already passed. We’re back in the daily routine on board while crossing from one country to another, but with one difference compared to our last voyages: we’re trying to save as much water as possible.
With this in mind Julian invented the seawater shower below deck. It sounds strange, but one of our “Lüfterhützen” (ventilation shafts) leads directly above a shower. So Julian stands on deck with a bucket full of salt water and pours it through the ventilation opening so it runs into the shower. You just have to remember to rinse the salt water off everything quickly so nothing starts to rust.
Today during the all-hands information meeting, Thilo said we only used 0.7 tons of water in the last 24 hours, which is incredibly good. I personally was really surprised by that, I have to admit, but pleasantly so.
Other than that, we got really lucky with the weather today. The wind became just a little bit stronger, so we could set a few more sails (we even set the brig sail). Because we were faster than needed during the last hours, we were even able to turn the engine off for a few hours during the day.
Except for a little rain in the afternoon, we had sunshine on deck the whole day. It always amazes me how happy it makes me to go outside and see a dry deck. Even though working in your bed can sometimes be pretty cozy, it’s always nicer to study for school outside — especially when you think about the fact that these days are probably the last ones to do so.
It feels incredibly unreal, but in 40 days we’ll be back home, and the “last times doing that” phase will start soon.
We actually started this topic during our geography lessons with Deli, but today’s highlight was when Thilo, our captain, taught us a lot about weather: weather at sea, why we sometimes brace the upper yards differently from the lower ones, a lot about high- and low-pressure zones, how we use weather predictions to navigate and plan a route, and also a lot about the different kinds of fog.
I believe he could have talked about that topic for at least a week and explain things to us until our brains collapse or explode. But fortunately he stopped for dinner and will continue tomorrow. We’re all looking forward to it!
One last thing before I end this report. It’s not certain yet, but since we’re engine sailing again to go faster than we would under sail alone, it might be possible that we catch up with the Johnny, who started her crossing two days before we left Bermuda.
It would be nice to at least see them on the radar — first of all because it’s the second Ocean College ship and we know them a little, and second because they’re always really proud of the fact that they’re faster than us.
So we hope to catch up soon, and you’ll find out in the coming daily reports whether we did.
Greetings:
Paula – feels so unreal to think of the fact that we only have 40 days left and I’m super super sad that our journey is slowly coming to an end but on the other hand I’m also so looking forward to see you all again AND to have my food again. Eat ice cream for less then 8 dollars per scoop or just look in the fridge for my favorite food sometime during the night. Cook for myself just how I like it in smaller portions than we do here. It was a great time here – still is- and I’m definitely gonna miss it I’ll probably never gonna lay on deck in the middle of the Atlantic again watching the night sky with those incredibly bright stars.
Im happy to see you soon and do endless stupid things again. Miss you.
