Lobster Party in the Caribbean
Author: Emilian
Beach volleyball, summer, and a cool drink right in the middle of January. What a day—but let’s start at the beginning.
On our voyage, nearly every day has the same routine and beginning: you wake up for your watch or for school and try to get through another day. Days at anchor are a welcome change from the normal routine. But this day was unlike any other, because today was a holiday from the ship. We were on a caribbean island. The boat that took us there arrived at 10:45 a.m.
We arrived at around 11 a.m. The first things we noticed were two swings in beautiful turquoise water and a beach volleyball court on one of the whitest beaches we have ever seen.
As soon as we got to the island, we started snorkeling at the coral reef in front of it. After getting out of the water, we began playing beach volleyball, spikeball, and cornhole. Some of us also read our books while every once in a while looking out at the beautiful sea and beach.
As the afternoon went on, our backs got redder with every minute. For a late lunch, we had lemon cake because Linn turned 18 today. With a birthday song and a great cake, it was — if you ask me — a very special and warm birthday, one of the best birthdays we have had and will have on our voyage. I don’t want to know how the day would have ended without sunscreen. Because of our sunburns we even had our own lobster party on the beach — without real lobsters, of course, but at least we all looked like them. Our lobster party eventually turned into said lobsters playing beach volleyball.
At 6 p.m., we had an amazing local dinner at a small restaurant on the island, which included coconut rice, mixed vegetables, tasty focaccia and a delicious coconut sauce. What a treat! Our deepest thanks and gratitude go out to Ibin and his team for their hospitality and great work!
As night began to fall, we set up our hammocks between the palm trees on the beach. Under the stars, one of the locals lit a big campfire and we made stick bread, accompanied by reggae music. What a beautiful day!
