What do you think—how many creatures can fit into a single 200 ml cup of seawater? Before Anton’s presentation a few days ago, nobody could have imagined the correct answer. The answer is 10 million! Isn’t that crazy?!
But how is it possible for so many creatures to fit into one single cup? The answer is simple: it can be filled with plankton. One species of plankton can be seen as tiny sparks of light at night when we look over the railing as the waves break. The light is very small and brief, but it is amazing to see.
We saw plankton for the first time in the Bay of Biscay. It was incredibly cool and beautiful at the same time. Now, in the Caribbean, the sea is full of plankton. Every evening and night, the lookout is amazed by this spectacle. Even today, scientists still do not have an exact explanation for this phenomenon. There are speculations that it could be a form of communication, self-defense, or even a sign of distress.
Last night, we caught some plankton with our plankton net and ended up with a net full of sparkling stars.
Plankton can be divided into two main groups: zooplankton and phytoplankton. Plankton is one of the most important components of the marine ecosystem. Phytoplankton produces around 50% of the oxygen we breathe.
Today, we collected plankton using a specialized plankton net. Afterward, we examined it under the microscope. It was fascinating to see what one of the tiniest organisms in the world looks like up close. These structures give us an amazing insight into the world of marine life!
Later in the evening, we caught plankton again — this time the bioluminescent kind — and it looked like a net full of little stars. Every time we touched or moved the net with our hands, the plankton lit up and glowed for a few seconds in the darkness of the night. ✨
