Today was perhaps the last day we spent at one of our stops. The mood here on our voyage was accordingly not so great, and you could really tell that everyone felt a little sad, even though we will be home soon. I thought today would be the perfect time to do a short recap of the Azores, because in my opinion this stop was one of the best — especially because of the many activities and excursions.

Horta:
In Horta, we spent about three days, and of course the starting point was Café Peter Sport. But the two hikes were also a real highlight. The caldera we saw there really impressed us. I think the supermarket was also constantly occupied by us students. We even met the sailing vessel Thor Heyerdahl there and their crew gave us one or two exciting tours.

Ponta Delgada:
Here in Ponta Delgada, we had quite a long stop. Once again, we had a really great program, which is definitely one of my favourites. On the first day, we went on a trip to a volcanic lake, where we went kayaking. For me, this was by far the coolest activity in the Azores, especially combined with the excursion to the hot sea springs afterwards.

We used the following day for our farewell trip and spent a lovely day together as a group. For a moment, we were a bit intimidated by the huge yachts next to us, but we all agreed that our ship is much nicer and more elegant than those plastic bathtubs. Unfortunately, the early departure on “mobile phone day” was a bit of a shame, which only increased our appreciation for the cruise.
All in all, I can say that Ponta Delgada was amazing and definitely a great final stop.

Today, there were also one or two things to do on board, because once again we spent the morning working with the boatswain instead of having a day off beforehand. Which of us students wouldn’t have liked a free morning for the first time in five months? In the end, the work was actually a lot of fun, as there is usually a good atmosphere on such days.

My task today was to turn a “Niederholer.” Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to carry out my favourite task—changing the gaskets. However, that’s something best done with Lotti, because Lotti and I are true professionals at it, and we always have great conversations, which we like to call “gording talks.” We even kept a beautifully used gording line as a memory of our beloved work.

In addition, today was also the last day when most of us still had a normal sleep rhythm, because since this afternoon we have returned to the regular watch system. Most of us are now very excited about the final stage of our adventure and hope that we can finish it just the way we imagined.

Grüße:

Lotta R: Liebe Grüße an Pauline Biene. Ich knuddel und denk an dich. Viel Erfolg bei deinen Prüfungen. Bis bald. An Klaus Kniselbacke und Müürgooo: steh ich barfuß im Vulkan, eure Nummer hab ich jaaa.
