Title: getting used to the routines
Author: Milena
The day started with a change of pace: everybody ate breakfast at 7:30 instead of the way it usually was, where only the upcoming watch eats at that time. The reason for that was the beginning of our new class schedules. Our watches were divided into two groups: one, the A (alpha) group, had the normal watch, and the other group, group B, had class.
The first lesson started at 9:00 and was supposed to go on until 11:00, but it ended earlier. I wasn’t part of the class today because I had watch and then galley duty, but I was told that they did something very interesting. They did a workshop about discrimination where they came up with a mind map about silencing— but without talking to each other while writing words on the board.
During class, the watch took down some sails that we had just set yesterday, but at least we used them for a bit. We’ve actually never had that many sails up before, so it was cool to see. But I heard the weather will stay this good, so maybe we’ll be able to turn off our motor and actually be a sailing ship, if the weather allows it, too.
After lunch, the second half of the school day started and, to everyone’s joy, it was maths and physics. Sadly, I had to go into galley duty and couldn’t listen… but tomorrow I have class too, so no escape. Then, after we had our daily ‘Kaffee und Kuchen,’ where we had cinnamon rolls from yesterday, we listened to the „Expi“-presentation about Tenerife.
As you see, today we learned a lot but — watch out — that still wasn’t everything. After the last crumbs of the cinnamon rolls were gone, the group did some self-learning time. The weather was nice and we had our seating sack on deck, so nearly everyone was there. It was very hot, too, so some of us cooled down with a little water-bottle fight. Sadly, there are no photos of that, but they were all drenched from head to toe.
In the afternoon, our new captain also gave us a lesson. I just know that it had something to do with an apple and a toothpick that had a piece of tape at the top to symbolize a flag or something, because our captain came into the galley and asked for those two things without any context.
Later, I was told that he taught them what you have to watch out for when you want to draw a map because of the curvature of the earth. But now I’ve got to go to bed because I have to be fit for class tomorrow.
