As the war rages on with the mosquitos onboard the Roald Amundsen, so does the hunt for strong winds. Watch 3 (the 8-12 watch) had a busy morning between theory and practice there was much to do. We rigged the emergency rudder and learned about all the flares and emergency smoke. We learned about man overboard both what to do if we are onboard and what to do if we are indeed the man overboard. This was not all doom and gloom however as we got to try on some über-sexy immersion suits followed by a mandatory dance party!
Then came Reinschiff … this was brasso brasso brasso and a deck wash using the emergency fire pump.
Most of the watches spent the day jibing and changing sails relentlessly to try and catch the wind. At 13:00 another MOB manouever was performed successfully followed by a rib sea safari where we turned into our inner Attenboroughs filming the Roald Amusden at sail in her natural habitat.
During this, one Toppsgast had to escape from the busy crew, to measure the hight of the sun with a Sextant. With the explaining help from the Captain and a lot of calculating the “Mittagsbreite” was determined. The calculated Position of our ship was only one nautical mile away from our actual GPS Position.
Today was the first day that all the sails got hoisted, even the Bramstengestag!
The Cluverboum aka der Klüverbaum was however the star of the show today. With the guidance of our trusty Bosun we scraped sanded and yes you guessed it, we tonkied the Klüverbaum. Hours of scraping and sanding were worth it when we saw the finished product and enjoyed some cake before the evening was over.
While our speed may be dropping our mosquito kill count has risen so we continue in hope for our future watches.

Während der Kampf gegen die Mücken an Bord der Roald Amundsen weitergeht, geht auch die Jagd nach starkem Wind weiter. Wache 3 (8-12 Uhr) hatte einen arbeitsreichen Vormittag mit viel Theorie und Praxis. Wir montierten das Notruder und lernten alles über Leuchtraketen und Notrauch. Wir lernten, was bei Mann-über-Bord-Fällen zu tun ist – sowohl was zu tun ist, wenn wir an Bord sind, als auch was zu tun ist, wenn wir tatsächlich der Mann über Bord sind. Doch es war nicht alles nur Trübsal, denn wir durften supersexy Taucheranzüge anprobieren, gefolgt von einer obligatorischen Tanzparty!
Dann kam Reinschiff … das war Brasso Brasso Brasso und eine Deckswäsche mit der Notfeuerpumpe.
Die meisten Wachen verbrachten den Tag damit, unermüdlich zu halsen und die Segel zu wechseln, um den Wind einzufangen. Um 13:00 Uhr wurde ein weiteres MOB-Manöver erfolgreich durchgeführt, gefolgt von einer Rib-Sea-Safari, bei der wir uns in unsere inneren Attenboroughs verwandelten und die Roald Amundsen in ihrem natürlichen Lebensraum filmten.
Währenddessen musste ein Toppsgast der geschäftigen Crew entkommen, um die Höhe der Sonne mit einem Sextanten zu messen. Mit der erklärenden Hilfe des Kapitäns und viel Rechenarbeit wurde die Mittagsbreite ermittelt. Die berechnete Position unseres Schiffes lag nur eine Seemeile von unserer tatsächlichen GPS-Position entfernt.
Heute waren zum ersten Mal alle Segel gesetzt, sogar das Bramstengestag!
Der Cluverboum, auch bekannt als der Klüverbaum, war jedoch heute der Star der Show. Unter Anleitung unseres treuen Bootsmanns haben wir den Klüverbaum abgekratzt, geschliffen und – Sie ahnen es schon – mit Tonkies bearbeitet. Stundenlanges Kratzen und Schleifen hat sich gelohnt, als wir das fertige Produkt sahen und noch etwas Kuchen genossen, bevor der Abend zu Ende war.
Auch wenn unsere Geschwindigkeit abnimmt, ist die Anzahl der getöteten Mücken gestiegen, also machen wir weiter und hoffen auf unsere nächsten Wachen
