My watch days usually start at 7 a.m., but today was kind of different. Two people from my watch are often late, and as a consequence, my Toppsgast Olaf decided that everyone in my watch would be woken up 15 minutes earlier.
I woke up to the information that it was 10°C cold, waves were breaking over the bridge, and it was very windy outside. So I decided to put on as many clothes as I had. In total, I wore six layers on my upper body: first a normal T-shirt, then a sweatshirt, a jumper, a hoodie, a rain jacket to stay dry, and finally an oilskin jacket.
On my legs, I usually wear three layers to stay warm: leggings, jogging pants, and oilskin rain pants.
Another piece of equipment you need is a climbing harness. At the moment, it is only allowed to go on deck with a climbing harness, because it is safer and ensures that you can stay secured at all times.
It’s not easy to put on all these clothes when the heavy swell is hitting the ship and you’re being thrown around in the “Tigergang,” the place where you find your clothes for the watch.
My watch was mostly as I expected, but there was one special weather phenomenon I had never seen before. It started to rain, and within a few minutes, the rain turned into hail. The wind, reaching up to 50 knots, blew the hailstones into your face, and the cold coming through the gaps in your gear made it even harder to endure.
The rest of the day was fairly normal. Most of us didn’t have the energy to do anything special, but as the day went on, the wind eased and the waves became smaller.
So there is hope!

Miriam: Hallo ihr alle. Der Nordatlantik is jetzt so wie’s angekündigt wurde und ich finds um ehrlich zu sein richtig cool🙈 es is kalt und stürmisch und riesige Wellen aber es macht echt Spaß. Salome du würdest es hassen und dir die Karibik zurück wünschen 😂 und Papa an dich muss ich oft denken mit „es gibt kein schlechtes Wetter nur falsche Kleidung“. Ich hab eindeutig die falsche Kleidung/ nicht genug warmes dabei😂
