Even though the day began in busy turmoil, it quickly turned into complete silence after lunch. We had a very tasty pumpkin soup, and everyone received a small potato heart in honor of Valentine’s Day. As always when we leave a harbor and head into what is usually a new episode of seasickness and high waves — although for now the sea is still very calm — my watch, Watch 3, was responsible for taking in the middle line.
After we left Varadero during an all-hands maneuver and packed the sails on the bowsprit again, I had to disappear into the galley, so I missed most of what happened on deck for the rest of the day. However, while cleaning up after lunch, I noticed the sudden silence on board. When I stepped outside, I saw people hauling on ropes and climbing the mast to unpack the sails. I’m not saying the procedure was carried out in total silence, but it was unusually quiet.
After a while, I realized that the silence was Emma’s fault. Emma is the name of the engine on board, and on our way from Bocas del Toro to Cuba she had been running constantly because we had headwinds the entire time. Even our machinist said it was a new record for him to cruise for nine days under engine. So he—and everyone else on the ship—was very happy that we were finally sailing again, without the constant humming in the background.
As a Valentine’s Day special, each of us had to write a pick-up line on a piece of paper that was handed out with the banana bread we had for “coffee and cake.” As you might expect from a group of teenagers, the lines were, let’s say, very creative. It was especially funny because some crew members joined in as well and seemed slightly surprised by the results. I would share a few examples, but I don’t want this report to get censored.
As a more personal Valentine’s gift, everyone received a letter from someone else, which had been placed under their pillow. After my galley duty, it was especially nice to read mine.
