A Dream Journey
Imagine this: you are lying beneath a clear blue sky, the sun shining on your face. You can feel the warmth on your skin as the temperature hovers around 28 degrees. But it’s not just the weather that feels like a dream — you’re also living out one of your own. You are sailing on a pirate ship through the Caribbean Sea. The wind is blowing from just the right direction, giving you perfect sailing conditions. The air smells like sunscreen and freedom. The sea is calm, with barely any waves. Beneath you, you can feel the wooden deck you’re lying on. If you listen closely, you can hear people talking and laughing. Very softly, there’s also a melody played on a guitar, carried toward you by the wind. You savor the moment — right up until you hear the unmistakable sound only a can of Pringles makes when it’s opened.

You decide to get up and see if you can grab a few. As you look around, you notice some people playing cards while others are lying all over each other, cuddling. A few single crew members are searching for a cool spot in the shade, reading a good book or simply talking about everyone and everything. And then you spot the object of all your desires. You sneak up to the box full of chips and steal a few while everyone else is looking the other way. You hear the crunch as the chip breaks, and the flavors explode in your mouth. This is the life.

And then reality hits you with the words: “Miriam, wake up. It’s 3:30 a.m. Your watch starts in half an hour. Get into your rain gear — it’s wet and cold outside.”

After a few moments of channeling all the motivation I had left, I stood up, put on my still-wet clothes, and went up on deck to start my watch. I was greeted by a dark, rainy night and the crew I was relieving, who couldn’t wait to get back into bed. Over the next four hours, we had plenty of time to think about how we had originally imagined this part of our journey would unfold. In the end, we all shared the same opinion: we had hoped it would be like the scenario at the beginning of this text.

For the rest of the day, we had the great opportunity to realize just how lucky we are to be sailing through this area, given that the chance of weather this bad is only five percent. In other words, there were clouds upon clouds, and it rained all day long.

That being said, we’ve had beautiful weather in the Caribbean before, and we’ll have it again — and we’re all eagerly waiting for its glorious return.

Grüße:

Maxim: Hello Mama und Papa. Hoffe euch geht’s gut. 👋
