A day filled with music

Today was filled with music. When I first woke up, I put in my earphones and listened to some of my favorite songs. I don’t think I’ve ever listened to the same songs as often as I do at the moment. But what should we do (with a drunken sailor) when we only have so much music downloaded? Before we went on our journey, we all had to think about what kind of music we would like to hear for the next six months. And to be honest, I’m kind of afraid that in the end I won’t be able to listen to some songs anymore because I’ve heard them too often.
As I was walking past the galley after breakfast, I could hear music playing some party songs. The galley is the only place on the whole ship where you’re allowed to listen to music over speakers. This is probably the reason for some famous “kitchen parties” and the only thing that makes Backschaft tolerable.
During my watch, I’m always humming different songs while being on lookout or steering the ship. They often fit the situation we’re facing at the moment. For example, when we were sailing through the big storms at the beginning, our hymn was “I’m Still Standing.” Now it’s “Geh Down,” which doesn’t really fit a specific situation, but it matches the overall mental state of the group.
At lunch, while we were sitting together and eating our “Kürbissuppe,” Deli was playing the guitar in the background. It’s one of my favorite parts of the day when you can just sit there and listen to someone playing the guitar just for themselves. It creates such a calm atmosphere, with the waves crashing against the ship, the sun warming your skin, and others playing cards on the other side of the deck.
Afterwards, I joined Andi’s English lesson. We talked about the significance and history of shanties, sang two of them, and interpreted their lyrics.
For me personally, shanties are a big part of my days on board. Nik, Maxim, Paula, Nienke, and I sing them pretty often, especially during our “Sitzsack time.”
I’m trying to learn as many of them as possible—on the one hand to be able to be the shantyman for the others, but also to be able to sing them at home. The day ended with a shanty night underneath the moon and the stars, where we tried to record “Drunken Sailor,” with Andi being the shantyman, playing the guitar, managing the recording process and the rest of us singing along.
Honorable mentions: we saw dolphins again, which was pretty awesome

JB: Bald kommen wir wieder in die Nähe von Land. Uns wird ein wunderbares Inselparadies erwarten. Wir sind alle gespannt und erwarten weiße Strände und Palmen sehnsüchtig. Man darf nicht vergessen, dass die Strecke von Martinique bis hier nach Panama noch mal eine halbe Atlantiküberquerung war. Mir geht es gut. Alles Liebe und bis ganz bald auf allen möglichen Kommunikationsweg. 🌌🌟💫
