The delightfully refreshing dynamics of the „Lasten“ of the Roald Amundsen
If I had been home, I would have loved to wake up to a sentence like this: no lessons today, complete freedom to organize your own learning experience. A rare luxury, really.
The maritime atmosphere was particularly immersive. The soothing strong motion of the ship inspired me to dedicate myself calmly to a few school tasks from home.
It quickly became clear what a special opportunity this was. Sitting on the cabin floor, fully grounded and close to the ship’s beating heart, encouraged regular, mindful pauses. Every few moments, I was reminded to stop, close my eyes, breathe deeply, and appreciate the movement that makes life at sea so… delightfully dynamic. Productivity, after all, thrives on flexibility.
Eventually, I felt inspired to seek out the community spaces. On deck, people had found impressively creative ways to rest and connect. Others were engaged in extraordinary relaxed conversations, clearly embracing the very pleasant rhythm of the ship movement and the day. It was one of those moments that make you reflect deeply on how best to fill the remaining hours — a privilege not everyone has.
The day continued smoothly until the galley presented us with its daily surprise. Our cold storage had decided to creatively rearrange itself, redistributing cream cheese, yogurt, and mustard in a way that suggested a bold, abstract interpretation of order. Deli and Paula were given the chance to demonstrate exceptional dedication, patience, and inventiveness, using toilet paper rolls as an innovative stabilizing technology. An exercise in teamwork that lasted well over an hour. What a very pleasant and unique learning experience!
Meanwhile, Sarah and I engaged in a careful selection process, separating the truly resilient cream cheese from those that had chosen a more adventurous path. It was a valuable lesson in discernment.
This is one of the many fascinating characteristics of our „Lasten“. The generous amount of supplies encourages constant awareness and long-term thinking. Sometimes, discoveries are made days later — a reminder that surprises are an integral part of life on board. Cleaning becomes a full-body experience, especially in the „Trocken- und Dosenlast“, where the climate efficiently supports personal endurance training. And of course, the gentle, continuous motion of the ship ensures that no task ever becomes routine.
All in all, a perfectly ordinary day at sea — rich in learning opportunities.
