I had one of the best nights of sleep of the journey, outside in my hammock in the cold night air, when I was suddenly woken by loud voices: ‘5, 4, 3, 2, 1 — Happy New Year!’ A few seconds later, everyone standing on deck started talking and wishing each other a happy new year and all the best. And so, a new year began.
On our journey, we experience many new beginnings. They appear in small moments, like the start of a new day, often accompanied by beautiful sunrises.
Our first new beginning was in Amsterdam on October 18th. It marked the start of our journey and the beginning of many more beginnings: the beginning of wonderful friendships, a time of learning about ourselves, and a period filled with fun.
The beginnings continued with our first voyage, followed by the beginning of a time full of suffering — seasickness, a real challenge for everyone of us. This was followed by the beginnings of new voyages, the discovery of new cities, new friendships, new crew members, new countries, new challenges, and even new continents.
With every new beginning, we learn more about ourselves. Each one helps us grow and master new challenges. A beginning brings new experiences and positive moments, but also difficulties. Every beginning is the start of a new story — a story everyone has to write for themselves. I think this is what the New Year symbolizes: new beginnings, a year full of new experiences, challenges, and thousands of opportunities to experience everything you want.
