One Atlantic crossing lies behind us, while another still lies ahead. Over the past few days, we have prepared ourselves—and the ship—for bad weather and a long period without solid ground beneath our feet.

Like squirrels, we wandered through different supermarkets buying snacks, drinks, and, most importantly, yumyum noodles. Now they are all stored in our rooms — some hidden so no one steals them, and others placed quite openly in the hope that someone might buy them. (They were quite pricey in Bermuda, so some of us are now gambling that others will run out of their supplies halfway through the crossing and somehow need to get new snacks.)

But, as I said, we also prepared the ship. We tried to finish all the painting jobs in time before the big waves make it impossible to find a dry place on deck. In addition, we used lots of ropes and the shelves in our rooms to secure our bags so they won’t fly across the ship.

To be honest, most of us are not really looking forward to the bad weather we were promised. Big waves, seasickness, and rain are awaiting us, while we had just gotten used to the Caribbean sun. Now we are no longer allowed to wear Crocs for safety reasons, and we have to be careful with our water usage.

But then, after all the warnings and fears about the North Atlantic, we woke up today to a clear blue sky. And it stayed that way until the sun went down and we saw an extraordinary sky full of stars. The water looked like a mirror, with only a few tiny waves.

All in all, it was a wonderful day — one we all really needed to remind ourselves that the next few weeks are just another regular leg of the journey. Maybe the weather will be bad and our motivation will be low, but there have been other legs with bad weather, and together we will get through this one as well.

Because, as a wise man once said: there is no bad weather — only the wrong clothes. 🌊
