Our day started when we were rudely awoken from our slumber by our fellow students carrying a box blasting a song by Die Ärzte (the only good thing about being woken up). If you’re wondering which song: I can’t tell you, I was wayyyy too tired to remember.
In the half hour we had before breakfast, everyone was running around trying to pack the last (or first) few things into our backpacks for the hiking trip. Technically, we were supposed to be done packing by 8 p.m. yesterday, but oh well.
After breakfast, the next thing on the agenda was Reinschiff and securing our cabins. Luckily (?) it was raining, so watch three, which I am a part of, didn’t have to do Reinschiff because our job was Messing—and that’s impossible during rain.
At 9:10 we were all standing on deck with our packed bags. At the pier we were separated into two groups and mixed with the Johnny students. It was awkward at first, but we gradually started talking—mostly about the differences between our ships and travel routes.
When we arrived at the place where we wanted to start our hike, we realized we had made a big mistake: it was cold as hell, and we were dressed the way people dress when the packing list says “pack bathing suits and towels.” Aka: some people were wearing shorts, and there wasn’t a single scarf or warm pullover in sight. Not ideal when you’re at about 2,000 meters altitude. At least it taught us a lesson: don’t stereotype Africa as an always-hot continent.
Because of the cold, we split again: one group took the short route, the other the long one. I went with the latter because, as we say in Germany: „Nur die Harten kommen in den Garten.“ And as we say in the jDAV: „Wir müssen da hoch.“ (Grüße gehen raus an die jDAV-Frankfurt-Menschen <3).
After a short stop at the cafeteria (chocolate muffins are an absolute must before hiking), our journey began. For the first few meters we were still freezing, but step by step it got warmer. That’s why there’s the hiking rule: “Be bold, start cold!” Otherwise, you start sweating very fast. Every hour we saw a mountain “top” in front of us, but once we reached it, instead of the actual summit, there was just another path leading higher. But on the bright side—every time we looked up from our feet—we saw a beautiful and constantly changing landscape.
Another helpful factor was the music. Luckily, Paula had brought a music box, which we connected to Julius’s MP3 player. A funny thing about our group is that whenever there’s music, we are all drawn to it like moths to a flame. So, safe to say, I was never far from where the music was.
After 2 1/2 hours we arrived at the top. Sadly, it wasn’t very spectacular because all we could see were clouds. As it turns out, that isn’t very common for that region—we were just unlucky.
On the walk back, we talked to the Johnny students some more and learned more about their lives, so the time went by quicker. Except for the moment when we took a wrong turn and had to walk back up—that felt like it took ages.
For the rest of the way, I was looking at the rocks and rock walls, debating how climbable they were, and then discussing it with Nik. All in all, it was a beautiful, funny, and exhausting hike. B
ack “home” we had a little party with the Jonny on our deck, which was beautifully decorated by our crew. It was fun while it lasted, but we sadly had to end it earlier than planned due to people being sick and things not working the way they were supposed to.
After cleanup I had harbour watch with Leonie, which meant we couldn’t go to the pier with the others to watch the spectacle of the evening: Sophia’s buzzcut! The first time we saw it was when she got back—and it looks amazing! Greetings
