Daily Life on Board
Experience the thrill of sailing on an international voyage aboard the brig ROALD AMUNDSEN! For this unique journey, we bring together an international crew that sails, learns, and faces the challenges of life at sea together. Setting sails, maintaining course, and working as a team—these are just a few of the tasks awaiting you.
Watch System – Taking Responsibility Together
At the start of the voyage, you’ll be assigned to one of three watches:
– **Watch 1:** 00:00-04:00 and 12:00-16:00
– **Watch 2:** 04:00-08:00 and 16:00-20:00
– **Watch 3:** 08:00-12:00 and 20:00-24:00
During your watch, you will steer the ship, keep lookout, and help with navigation under the guidance of the experienced crew. Safety is our top priority: at the beginning of the voyage, there will be a thorough safety briefing, and the entire crew will learn the basic commands and line handling. Step by step, you will be introduced to daily life on board—from climbing the rigging to actively participating in sail handling and ship maneuvers.
Teamwork and Camaraderie at Sea
On board, every helping hand counts, and every watch contributes to the shared success. Whether on lookout, at the helm, or in the galley: teamwork turns the crew into a true community. Everyone pitches in, whether cleaning the ship or working in the “backschaft” (galley). Day by day, you will learn more about the ROALD AMUNDSEN and the principles of traditional seafaring, enabling you to act more independently and take on increasing responsibility.
International Cooperation – New Friendships and Unforgettable Moments
On the ROALD AMUNDSEN, you will meet people from all over the world, overcome language barriers, and work closely together. Only through coordinated teamwork can the sails be optimally set and positioned in the wind—a task that requires trust and communication. Whether maneuvering on deck or climbing the rigging together, you will quickly learn to rely on your crewmates and form friendships that often last a lifetime.
Details Rauma
Rauma. The town of wood by the sea. Rauma, located in the southwest of Finland on the Baltic coast, is one of the oldest cities in Scandinavia and the third oldest city in Finland. The entire old town, with around 600 colorful wooden houses, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991 and houses the largest historic wooden house district in Northern Europe. Rauma was founded in 1442. The region quickly developed into a center of maritime trade. In 1897, the city had the largest Finnish sailing fleet with 57 ships. The houses in the winding alleys, all of which have historical names, feature richly decorated facades. While other wooden house districts in the North were often destroyed by fires, the beautiful old town of Rauma has been spared from fires since 1682 and is therefore exceptionally well-preserved. Over 300 years without a fire: an absolute rarity for a city made entirely of wood. The tower of the Holy Cross Church, built in 1520 at the edge of the old town, served as a landmark for sailors for centuries. The Maritime Museum offers visitors the opportunity to try the only navigation simulator in Finland. The town is also known for its lacework; it’s no surprise that there is one craft store after another. Rauma is a vibrant city where the historical heritage lives on in perfect harmony with modern lifestyle.
Details Gävle
Gävle. The city on the Maiden Coast. The university town of Gävle, with its around 100,000 inhabitants and founded in 1446, is located just over 100 nautical miles north of Stockholm at the mouth of the Gavleå River in the Bothnian Bay. Gävle impresses with its unique location on the picturesque Jungfrukusten (Maiden Coast), which stretches along the regions of Gästrikland and Hälsingland. The scenic archipelago, with its beautiful fishing villages, stunning beaches, and remote islands, offers great opportunities for swimming, fishing, and sailing. In the city, there are green oases that invite relaxation and a wide variety of activities. The wooden houses of the city stand close together, brightly painted in all colors, and flowers bloom in rhythm with them. Cobblestone streets and lovingly designed facades invite you to wander. It’s the Swedish romance straight out of a picture book! Gävle is also known for its ice hockey team Brynäs IF (e.g., champions in 2012 when the club celebrated its 100th anniversary), the coffee brand Gevalia (their roasted coffee consists of the finest offerings from the coffee world), and the Boulognerskogen, one of the largest city parks in Sweden. And the „Gävlebock,“ a straw figure (13 meters high, 7 meters long) weighing 3 tons. In 2010, rumors spread that it would be kidnapped by helicopter and placed in Stockholm’s Stureplan. It remained just a rumor. But the people of Gävle have been particularly vigilant since then. The experience world „Furuviksparken,“ a mix of zoo, amusement park, and adventure park, also deserves attention. Furuvik is considered one of the best monkey zoos in Europe.
