It’s 11:30 pm. I‘m being woken up. „Oh no!“, I think. „I‘ll have watch now!“ But while putting on my sail gear, I notice something: In the Tigerfloor are people that I usually don’t see before my watch. And with a blow I remember it again. We‘re sailing in whole watches again! The „foreign“ people, that I see, are from the other watch part (Teilwache). At the request of us students, the lessons are cancelled today on the crossing to Ponta Delgada. Instead, it‘s the first time since Costa Rica that everyone has Watch together. Immediately my mood gets better. The watch is quite relaxed despite the still persistent cold. We suspend a puddle twice for exercise (as a dinghi replacement) and then do stargazing. We all have even more fun than usual due to the full watches. You’re wondering why? Here are a few advantages of whole guards:
1. You don’t have to do as much as usual, like rudder or Outlook (about 1x per watch) because you are now enough people.
2. If 2 people are at the rudder or in the lookout and 2 more in the galley, you still have enough others to talk to.
3. There are enough people who voluntarily go to the galley to cut fruit salad (or make bread and roll dough in the 8-12 watch and roll buns in the 4-8 watch).
4. There are more people available for a maneuver.
5. The watch is funnier in general because you are more people.
After singing Shantys at the End, we‘re being replaced by watch 2 and go to bed, before we‘re being woken again at 11:30 am. The afternoon watch is really chilled as well. For over an hour we are busy with brass polishing. No one has done this during the Atlantic crossing for about two weeks, so it was necessary once again. However the new polishing agent makes this task much easier than usual. After watch, there is another lecture by our captain Thilo on navigation, before another day is over and dinner is due. After this, we watch a film about the tragic accident of the sailing ship ‘Pamir’, which moves us all very much. Then we all go to bed and look forward to the next day, on which we will arrive in Ponta Delgada.
