Useful to bring along

Here are a few ideas and suggestions for your personal equipment - and what you might find useful to have on board:

• You must bring along valid documents of identification: at least an identity card, if the itinerary lies within the country of your citizenship / residence. Otherwise a valid passport is mandatory.

• If the trip includes countries outside Europe (and you hold European citizenship), please remember your passport and the necessary VISA, as well as possibly required vaccinations.

• The documents of identification will be collected by the captain at the beginning of the voyage: These documents will be added to the IMO-crewlist if this should become necessary. Since this procedure complies with the current jurisdiction, this rule cannot be avoided. At the same time, you will receive your personal safety harness in exchange for your documents for the duration of the voyage.

• Please pack your clothes in a rucksack or soft traveling bag. Suitcases (especially hardtop cases) are difficult to store, since there is not much room on board.

• We recommend you take out a personal accident insurance covering recreational activities and/ or a separate health insurance policy including return transport from abroad.

• In case you take medication regularly or are otherwise concerned with health issues, please bring along your own medication and inform the captain or the health officer on your arrival.

• Sturdy shoes give you a good footing even in the rigging or in stormy weather. Hiking shoes with a small heel have proven to be ideal. Yachting shoes or sailing shoes with thin soles are not comfortable for work in the rigging - sturdy, heavy shoes are best and do not hurt our decks.

• We strongly recommend to bring along suitable clothing for periods of bad weather and rainy days (this includes a waterproof jacket, waterproof trousers and wellies.. If you don't like hoods, bring a southwester). When sailing the contact with water is not unusual! [if you are a sailor: brong your foul weather gear - the version not minding contact with tar or coffee with milk jumping at them]

• Suitable hard-wearing clothing that will keep you warm! It can get quite cool whilst sailing, and especially during night watches you will welcome a warm woolly hat and scarf. The Roald is no yacht: there will be plenty of opportunities to get messy. Guess why the traditional colour of the navy is indeed a dark navyblue (and not white, as is suggested in many movies)... old clothes are more fun; you can move around the ship comfortably without worrying about a spot of tar.

• Those who wish to participate in small maintenance jobs around the ship, should bring along dungarees or similar working clothes that can be dirtied.

• Please bring sun protection (suncream) for the sunny days: you should go for a very high factor, since the effect of the sun is greatly strengthened by the reflection on the water. The danger of sunburn is very high. Bring good sunglasses and a cap along. If you wear glasses please remember to bring a lanyard or similar.

• We only have a limited access to 220 Volt. [continental European ship - hence no 220 Volt, Central European plugs ...] Please keep this in mind if you bring along electronic travel gear, mobile phones or laptops. Quite apart from that, the moist salty air at sea does not usually improve these machines! However, it is possible to recharge batteries (e.g. of digital cameras) when the generator is on. There is the chance of voltage peaks occurring, which could destroy the apparatus if very sensible or equipped with a charger not featuring current control. We take no liability for this!

• Mobile phones are not really necessary. The ROALD is often not within reach of mobile phone connections, and the ship can be contacted anytime in case of an emergency via the ship's office, since we are equipped with Inmarsat.

• A torch and pocket knife (with lanyard!) are often invaluable on board.

• If you have your own safety harness, you are welcome to bring it with you.

• Guitars and games are warmly welcomed and often provide for some very atmospheric evenings. (one guitar is on board)

• In case you should be unable to take part in a voyage you have booked at short notice, please contact the ship's office as soon as possible. The ship will otherwise wait for you in vain. Your cancellation is required in writing: please consult our terms and conditions on this.
